E46 Wheel Alignment

E46 323i/325i/328i/330i: the E46 has more room for wider wheels than the previous E36. For the Spec E46 series we use a 9.0' wheel on the front and rear and they clear without issues. A 9.0' wheel and 255-265 tire should be all you need for grip in this car. A 9.5 or 10.0 in the rear is also possible if you want to do a staggered set. Aspects of E36/E46 rear suspension design is that by adjusting the camber (which is easy to adjust) also creates slight changes in the static toe setting (which is very difficult to adjust). So by setting the camber and toe to a preset value, it is only necessary to adjust the camber bolts at the track to make significant.

By now, any BMW owner who has removed their wheels will tell you that the wheels are held on in place by bolts. This differs from most American cars which have studs protruding from the wheel hub providing the wheel fastening through nuts.

Because BMW uses bolts, it can be difficult to align the lug pattern from the wheel to the hub. The procedure may not be hard on a 14' wheel from an E30 but larger 19' wheels on late models are heavy and cumbersome. The front wheels are most difficult to align when you try to spin the wheel to align the pattern but the entire hub just spins with it.

Luckily the OEM BMW tool kit has a unique tool to aid you in the wheel installation process. There is a metal pin in the toolkit that has many functions but its use in this particular example has the purpose of aligning the wheel to the hub.

How to use the BMW wheel alignment pin?

Place the plastic end of the tool alignment pin into any of the bolt locations on the wheel hub. Next, take the loose wheel and simply align one of the lug holes from the wheel to the alignment pin. This pin will then guide the wheel onto the hub allowing for the rest of the lug pattern to fall in place.

You can now remove the alignment pin and proceed to install the bolts. Remember to hand start each bolt before using a power tool. This will prevent the potential to cross thread the bolts. Tighten the bolts in a cross or star pattern and please remember to torque to factory specifications. Refer to your maintenance or Bentley manual for these torque specs.

I actually didn’t take a single photo of this entire process, but about a week ago I set aside the whole weekend to do the rear arch rolling. I knew this was going to be a little changeling, not because of the arch rolling itself, but because BMW decided to pack the inner lip of the rear arches with some kind of sealant to help prevent rust. That’s a good thing – I like their idea behind it – but it’s a nightmare if you want to roll the arches!

I did a lot of reading about the procedure, and the majority of what I said was take it slow, use some heat, and swear a lot! That’s pretty much exactly what I did. A combination of a couple of various chisels, a blowtorch, and a LOT of patience, and finally they were done. After over 1 whole day, I may add!

Finally though, my new wheels are now fitted – all around. The fronts just fitted straight away, no issues at all, it was the rears that caused all the headache

How to add employee discount to anthropologie. I’m really pleased with it though, looks fantastic. Completely transformed the car

And then fast-forward to yesterday, after about a week since the new wheels have been on, I went for alignment. I spaced out fitting the new wheels & alignment by a week or so to make absolutely sure that I was happy with how the car was sitting.

I knew the alignment would be a quite badly off, but -9 rear toe on one side! That’s impressive!

Not exactly what I was hoping for on the rear. We had a look into it and it seems there must be something bent causing so much negative camber (drivers rear). I’m yet to investigate that further, or if I will, but the excess camber is causing toe-in problems too.

I’m hoping it might be a bent upper rear wishbone (as that’ll be the easiest to change). A bent trailing arm is fairly unlikely as they are solid cast, so I think I’ll try a replacement upper wishbone first — but this is fairly low on my todo list, it’s not causing any untoward characteristics
